  • Denomination: upPE-T – Upcycling of PE and PET waste to generate biodegradable bioplastics for food and beverages packaging
  • Duration: 1/11/2020 – 31/10/2024
  • Goal: New strategies to manage plastic waste sustainably. Plastic waste poses a high level of danger to the environment and is a significant contributor to climate change. In more specific terms, the plastic used in packaging accounts for 60% of all plastic waste in Europe. The truth is that it has become a serious problem for waste management with possible environmental repercussions. The situation is dramatic due mainly to the use of polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in plastics, substances that make their sustainable management difficult. The project aims to overcome this challenge by developing PE and PET upcycling methods based on enzymatic technologies in order to use the products obtained from this biological degradation in the production of bioplastics for food and beverage packaging. + info
